CMB Tech Pulse: Shifts are Starting in the Applications Status Quo

During Q4 of 2009, CMB surveyed its IT Decision Maker Panel on planned deployment and requirements for PC client applications. The results are based on the responses of roughly 200 IT decision makers. Over half the respondents are in companies with 1000+ employees.

Introduction

Not surprisingly, Microsoft dominates PC client application software licenses, making up 70% of all licenses installed at organizations that use Microsoft applications (97%). What is surprising is that Google has 17% of all licenses for companies that use Google applications (20%). For companies that use enterprise applications like SAP (25%) and Oracle (14%), these licenses make up approximately 23% of the software installed base. What this shows is there is potential for entrants to quickly gain up to 25% share once they are established in an enterprise.

Key Takeaways:

  • The sands are slowly shifting for client market share.
  • There is general satisfaction with all major client vendors as measured by net promoter scores.
  • Cost, as measured in either licensing or TCO, is still top consideration in making client software purchases.
